Golden Realms Expansion Revealed!

Set sail for a new world, where exotic monstrosities, lost treasures and new empire building opportunities await!

Golden Realms greatly expands Age of Wonders III’s empire building mechanics and introduces bucket loads of new content. These new features are used in random maps, new scenarios and a new story campaign, where Halfling survivors settle in a distant land filled with danger and treasures never seen before.

New Content Includes:

  • The Halfling Race: The little folk are back, with new units, heroes and leaders. The jesters shoots fireworks which dazzle the enemy and the cleaver flinging brew brothers keep the Halfling armies fed while on the road. Halflings can be used with all classes and introduce the new Luck mechanic which allows them to dodge incoming attack while they’re in good spirits.Features-Allie
  • Golden Realms Campaign. In this three scenario campaign, you help the Halfling survivors of the Heartwood Massacre rebuild an empire in an exotic land and confront an ancient evil.
  • Exotic Map Locations: Capture the Naga Dwelling, home to serpentine queens and giant man-snakes, and discover new treasure sites such as the fabled Lost City to benefit your empire.
  • Over twenty new units: Encounter new exotic units such as the filth throwing Dread Monkeys, alluring Mermaids and the fearsome Glutton who can swallow whole regiments in one bite.
  • New Hero Items: The Golden Realms contain 50 new magical artifacts to discover and use. Wield the enigmatic Crystal Skull, or wear a stylish Witch Doctor’s Headdress to mix in with the locals.
  • Wild Magic Specialization: Unleash wild magic. Cause spontaneous mutations, warp equipment and turn orderly battles into a pandemonium where the lines of battle are violently warped.
  • Partisan Specialization: Use new skills for guerrilla warfare. Create concealed hide-outs and develop ambushing skills.
  • Two hand crafted scenarios:  Playable single and multi-player these new stand-alone scenarios are built around the new features of the Golden Realms expansion.

New Golden Realms Features:

  • Mystical City Upgrades: Arcane treasure sites located in your domain unlock new unique upgrades for your cities, making the location and specialization of your cities more important than ever. Building a city near a Crystal Tree unlocks the Enchanted Armory which reinforces your armored units.Features-Glutton
  • Empire Quests: Achieve empire building goals before your rivals to unlock unique rewards for your realm. This introduces a new type of indirect competition between players. Examples are the Eternal City: be the first to build a metropolis and get an awe-inspiring Monument of Prime Good and Evil, where the first player to achieve full good or full evil alignment has a party of champions the respective alignment join at no cost.
  • Seals of Power: A new King of the Hill style victory condition where players must capture and hold the dangerous Seals of Power structures in order to achieve victory.  Don’t sit and hold back as broken seals attract extra-dimensional beings wanting to take the Seal back.
  • Defensive City Upgrades:  Each race has a unique city defense to build.  The Draconian’s Firestorm Pillar sets ablaze those who dare attack their city. Or the Bell Tower for the Humans which rallies the citizenry to shoot volleys at oncoming enemies.

Features-Banner2The new content and features mentioned above are integrated into the updated Random Map Generator.

Age of Wonders III: Golden Realms is the first premium expansion (prices TBD) and incorporates feedback from the community. It will coincide with a patch adding updated AI, balance, a new Spell Disjunction System, Steam Workshop and Cloud Saves for Steam Users. Golden Realms is set for a September 18th 2014 release and available as DLC via online stores such as Steam and GoG.

A bit less going for it than I had hoped or expected (Was hoping for at least one new class), but still, looking good.

And hey, everyone, we were wrong about it being the Frostlings, it was the Halflings.

(The new Specializations sound pretty rad, too)

Yaargh! Is it free, or do I have to pay? Either way, it’s mine!

    #114579

So… no Necromancers and no Frostlings? :(

    #114580

Out of curiosity, what were you expecting?

Necromancer class. The race I thought was a pretty even toss up between Frostlings and Halflings, but I know a lot of people were expecting it’d be Frostlings for expanded use of frost damage.

The update listed is free, but the actual expansion is not. I am unsure exactly what is precisely is included in the free update though. I assume that everything listed in the New Features/Content is not free.

    Eh, halflings…

I would have hoped for frostlings.

naga could have been a race aswell instead of a dwelling.

But im not gonna complain, visually it all looks realy good.
new units look pretty fine aswell.

I’m not sure, but I’d wager the New Features whicha re listed in BLACK are in the free update.

    worst expansion possible
    no necro -> won’t buy

    #114597

And hey, everyone, we were wrong about it being the Frostlings, it was the Halflings.

I expected halflings if the expansions came out in december (hobbit movie). I was shocked too when i found out it was halflings – but its a happy surprise as the new luck mechanic feels so good!!

I am unsure exactly what is precisely is included in the free update though

I assume everything in the OP minus the quoted bit is a part of the paid expansion.

a free update adding updated AI, balance, a new Spell Disjunction System, Steam Workshop and Cloud Saves for Steam Users.

naga could have been a race aswell instead of a dwelling.

I don’t think so, not enough stuff for a full race. Besides it would meant delaying the expansion till xmas. No ty.

    Frostlings? Its summer! :-)

We hope to be able to keep on expanding AoW with more races and another class.

This stuff takes a ton of work, and not that its not just about character content but also the features, skills new abilties which really impact gameplay.

    #114603

Yes, Halflings are back! Morale will be very important for them, interesting.

And release-date is quite soon! Can’ wait to try it. Mystical City upgrades make cities more diverse. Empire quests is cool for competition and focus on certain goals (guess what mono/multi culture quests will be). Seals of power sound like a very interesting new victory condition for late game. And Devensive City upgrades make city sieges even more dangerous :)
And don’t forget updated AI and a new Spell Disjunction System! I really hope the AI on the strategic map is improved.

    Is the diplomacy also improved?

@ nvc_for_the_soul Yep – Hope to have a dev journal on diplomacy updates soon!

    #114606

    Is the diplomacy also improved?

Slightly, though its being focused after the GR expansion. Its a high priority for the devs =]

nvm, lenny posted about it instead =]

Eh I am really let down now…

Was expecting frostlings, got boring halflings – I really, really hate this race – worst possible addon, in my opinion.

Also, defensive city upgrades, which all of them works like additional dmg dealer? Boooring… could be much more imaginative, like reinforced gates, defensive towers, wolf’s pits etc.

No new class? I was really hoping for a new one.

No new outfits, poses, backgrounds etc. for hero creation?

    And what about improvements?
    - Will AI still be lacking on strategic mp?
    - Will Naval combat still be unbalanced and dull?
    - Will there still be no epic magic spells that made spezialiation feel powerful?

To sum up, the only nice things currently are:
    - new items, monsters etc.
    - mystical city upgrades
    - seals of power
All of this could be added via DLC.

Btw. What I really was hoping for was some epic north land expansion with necromancer class and frostling race :)

Frankly, I had hoped for a new race AND a new class – but I will take what I get and won’t complain. :)

I just hope, when this is finally done we will have at least 8 races and 8 classes.

    #114611

@ Khelle, these Haflings are anything but boring.

Haha true. Hey I’m happy no matter what you guys crank out. Everything I’ve played by you guys up to and including AoW3 has been top notch. I’m excited. :)

Cool, thanks for the answer Lennart & iHunterKiller.

Tombles is brilliant again in the movie: “he is disgusted by his own stench“. Really funny.

    #114618

Wow, someone is a little bit … cranky? =)

    poses, backgrounds

    Yea these are included :)

    Eh.. so?

Looks good. Most importantly are the gameplay improvements, the race addition is not as vital. Frostlings, undeads fits a winter release.

A quick note, the resurgence buff to a city is insane… not sure that can ever be balanced.

Don’t get me wrong, I just love this game series and want AoW3 to be superb in every possible aspects in comparison to old games. I was just hoping for expansion to be really big and awesome – something like Shadow Magic was for AoW2 – but now it does not seem like its going to. Its not just me, I think many other players are going to feel the same way.

AoW3 feels currently nice, but nothing more than that. I was hoping, first expansion will come out no earlier than second half of 2015, and to change this game from coal to its diamond form :)

Meh halflings aren’t boring. They’re one of the archetypal “trickster” races sk they’re anything but, actually. Even if no frostlings, this shouldn’t be a letdown to anyone. They’ve always been an interesting race, and I have a feeling they’ll be quite a bit stronger thjs time around. ;)

    #114627

something like Shadow Magic was for AoW2

SM was worked on for so long that it actually became a separate game instead of an expansion lol
Tbh, i prefer to get content in small doses. The age of great big expansions taking multiple years to get released is gone with the advancement of technology. Now devs can easily release content to their fans and get instant feedback, making the game better on a monthly if not weekly basis!

Well, the game is out for about 135 days.

Did you exspect an Expansion with 3 races, 3 classes and 100 additional new units on top of that?

I was 100% sure it would have Necro and Frostling too, but I am pleasantly surprised by the Halfling!

    1) Cool new synergy between Morale and Luck (and physical vulnerability).
I was wondering though: could Halflings get more than 15% Luck when they have so much higher Morale?

    2) Naga!!!

    3) Wild Magic!!!
I was kind of “ewww, Warg!?” and then “Dragon!!! Mwahahahah!”
I hope the unpredictability is balanced enough, though.

The only one that disappoint me is the lack of new class. Oh well, I hope the Necrolings package will be out as second expansion at December. The theme fits, don’t you think? ;)
