Age of Wonders III cover art revealed!

After having worked on it for several months, we are thrilled to finally show you the cover art of Age of Wonders III.  Some keen-eyed forum users already noticed an early version on Amazon.de, but this is the real deal!

AoW3_boxart_int_final

After going with a bunch of alternatives with our co-publishing partners, we settled on this concept. Our retail partners want a standout cover, preferable with the logo at the top so it’s easy to see on the shelves. The cover should show the experience of what the game is about. It displays the various types of leaders you can be in the game , looming above a battlefield in a fantastic world. The central character also has high contrast so we have an element that pops from a far (from smaller on-screen versions).

There were big arguments whether a female (Sundren) or male (Edward) should be the central character. Apparently covers with women sell a lot less, so we opted for the male. Don’t tell this to Rhianna Pratchett (our friend and writer who worked on Overlord!). Seriously though, we felt the pose with the central large sword better fitted with the male dreadnaught than the female Rogue. The light beyond Age of Wonders logo shines on the lead characters, as if they have a heavenly mandate to protect the arcadian landscape below from the attacking army. Will the player protect the Age of Wonders, or use it for his own evil goals?

The art is a group effort. The initial concept was done by Lennart, subsequently Lead Artist Allert van der Leij did the 3D posing and worked out the page core of the page in high detail. Additionally Intern Chilly Prins (who has a great knack for color and environment) added painterly details, bringing the elements together. Then Len did some final detailing on the characters.

The Characters:

  • Dwemus, A Dwarf Theocrat. A jolly Dwarf Priest appearing in the story. He’s got a grudge against the Commonwealth
  • Sundren, High Elf Rogue. Daughter of Julia and King Saridas. Protagonist of the Elven Court Campaign
  • Edward, Human Dreadnaught. Protagonist of the Commonwealth Campaign.
  • Reshkar, Draconian who you’ll help find a new homeland in the the Elven Court Campaign
  • Saridas, former Dark Elf, appearing in both EC and CW campaigns

(Elements of) this art will also be used as banners in the digital stores and on the webpage. Hopefully we’ll get some posters printed too.

Let us know what you think!

Dwemus remind me a little Dragonball, he should sell lol.

But two EC characters, one neutral converted to EC, one commonwealth and want unkwnown. Poor Edward is lonely.

Now I’m wondering who that goblin was and why he/she was taken off the final cover art.

Looks AOW-worthy! Nice to read how the cover art came into being including arguments for certain decisions. Thanks for sharing these.

I like the following part; it’s kind of funny, but I am not sure if it’s funny on purpose.

I am in for some evil ;)

    I like it!

I was a bit surprised initially Julia or Merlin didn’t make an appearance, but then I thought there are already plenty of elves and humans on the cover already.

Big fan of the army rushing into the fire of the the end of his sword, its poetic and looks awesome!

I find it a little disappointing that people would choose a game based on the gender of the presented protagonist. I’m reminded of J.K.Rowling, whose publishers shortened her name so boys would read her books (this was before she was a household name, obviously). But if I’m being honest with myself, I probably will be playing through as Edward, at least at first.

That said, this cover is beautiful (new wikipedia title card!) and is getting me even more psyched for 2014.

It would definitely catch my eye in a store. I love it. The only thing that looks odd to me is the dwarf’s halo.

Thanks for the feedback, glad most like it!

The Goblin is Tannah Boslarf, a female Animist. She’s an enemy in the campaign.

Julia and Merlin are in the campaign, but they are no longer protagonists.

I agree. With a cover like that, it’d be a shame not to have a physical copy.
    Well done, guys!

Please note Triumph earns less than half off a physical copy compared to a digital distributed copy of the same price. :-)

Thanks for mentioning it Lennart! It was in my mind to open a topic about this when we come closer to release. Many people think that when they go to a store and buy a game for 60$ then this 60 dollar is going directly to the developers. No! Only 30 dollar or less(taxes, distributors, retail share ect.) On the other hand digital distributiors like Steam or GoG work with smaller share+ they cut out the “middle man”(the retail store) . Of course i don’t want to tell anyone what to do, but if you are someone like me, who don’t have a “fetish” for physical copies just want to support the developers the best as he can, then you will buy a digital copy.

I don’t like not having a physical copy, but in the interest of supporting Triumph, I’ll be happy to make an exception.

Phooey. I was hoping for a goblin protagonist in one of the campaigns.

    …sundren, high elf rogue… edward, commomwealth dreadnought…
does this mean the main campaign characters have fixed classes now?

Animist? This is pretty interesting, because that’s not one of our six leader classes. So it seems that the campaign will have leader classes not available to the player, or possibly available in future DLCs. Awesome.

I figure it’s just a ‘lost in translation’ issue. Animist and Arch Druid are the same thing, if I remember Lennart or one of the others even used the term ‘Animist’ before, and clarified it as being a former choice for the Arch Druid’s class name or something.

    So clearly we should buy…both!?:)

    Also, estimated price?

Yes, Animist was the old name of the Archdruid.

    #13714

I suppose I should have asked if the digital copies will therefore be cheaper?

And where will one be able to get them? D/L straight from Triumph would surely be the best option for Triumph, as obviously Steam will take a cut…

Steam, GoG and the other digital distributors take their cut, still a purchase from GoG or Steam will give them more money than any physical copy

Darned; I keep saying Animist. We changed the name to Archdruid just before the announce. The old name still popups in resources and design docs.

@BLOODYBATTLEBRAIN Without digital distribution a project like AoW probably wouldn’t be viable with limited PC game shelf space. The resurgence in hardcore PC gaming for a large part can be attributed to digital distribution.

The cut for digital distribution is very much worth it. Their offer a community of customers, bandwith, auto patching, payment and return handling, etc, etc.

    #13723

    @ Lennart, yeah I knew that :) .

Hell my Steam library has a copy of every physical game I have ever owned, including your games (2 copies of each then, so far, from me to you:).

Will there be an option to d/l it directly from you?
